People tend to assume that slugs are ugly but an underwater filmmaker has shattered this preconception by sharing spectacular footage of a range of bright and colourful sea slugs.
“Can you believe these are real animals?!” says Luca Keller from Underwater Lunatics Media who shared the fantastical footage on Instagram. “Nudibranchs – aka sea slugs – are some of the ocean’s wildest, most colourful creatures.”
Keller loves introducing people to these magnificent molluscs. “Every time I show someone their psychedelic patterns and wild colours, the reaction is the same: ‘Wait, that’s real?!’” he says.
It’s clear to see why. From the pink desirable flabellina (Coryphellina exoptata) with its white frosted tips to the bold blue and yellow outline of Glossodoris acosti, the little critters in his videos look like something out of a toddler’s imagination, says Keller: “So bright. So weird. So unreal.”
