How many trees are there in China? Scientists just counted them and here's what they found

The researchers discovered that there are roughly 100 trees for every person living in China.

A pioneering study has produced the most detailed tree density map of China to date, providing an estimate of the country's total number of trees and their distribution.

To construct this high-resolution map, researchers analysed an immense dataset – over 400 terabytes – gathered from more than 76,000 forest plots from across the country.

By integrating this with environmental factors such as climate, soil and topography, and employing machine-learning algorithms, they were able to generate an exceptionally accurate assessment of tree density.

So, how many trees did they count?

The findings, published in Science Bulletin, reveal that as of 2020, China had a staggering 142.6 billion trees – that's the equivalent of around 100 trees per person.

The average tree density was approximately 689 trees per hectare.

Which parts of China have the most trees?

The team found that tree distribution varies widely across China. The cold temperate coniferous forests dominate, accounting for over 60% of the nation’s trees, with an estimated 87.9 billion.

At the provincial level, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, Yunnan and Guangxi each support more than a billion trees, collectively comprising 32% of China’s total.

Tibet stands out with the highest per capita tree count, boasting nearly 2,000 trees per person.

Why is it important to know tree numbers?

The research provides a vital tool for conservationists and policymakers, supporting China’s ambitious plan to plant and restore 70 billion trees over the next decade.

Experts can use this data to refine afforestation strategies, optimise tree-planting efforts and enhance conservation initiatives, say the researchers.
