Among terrestrial species, the giant armadillo of South America is going to be hard to beat, with a mouth crammed with up to 100 little flat-topped, peg-like teeth that it uses to crush ants and termites.

The spinner dolphin, though, a long-snouted species of the open ocean, has as many as 260. Like the giant armadillo’s, they are all pretty much the same size and shape, but pointier – all the better for catching slippery seafood prey before swallowing it whole.

This is the greatest number of teeth of any vertebrate aside from fish, some of which possess many hundreds.
