The Arctic fox is a stunning creature, but these videos shows its tenacity in hunting as well as its striking look. In Iceland, Arctic foxes live on a diet of mammals, seabirds, field mice and berries – but elsewhere they mainly eat lemmings (small rodents).
These videos capture an Arctic fox using the techinque often used to catch lemmings, which requires them going to extreme lengths, jumping several feet into the air and nosediving into the snow to catch them from their burrows. This is a technique known as 'mousing'.
Its white winter coats help it camouflage in the snowy landscapes it inhabits, but this sheds in the summer months to reveal a rich brown pelage. They are cleverly adapted for the extreme temperatures of the Arctic, with a thick and fluffy coat of fur and pads on the base of their feet which act as snowshoes. They use their tail as a blanket while sleeping, wrapping it around themselves to prevent heat loss.
