Wildebeest, also known as gnu, are one of southeast Africa's most recognisable animals.

Each year they make an epic journey in search of fresh grazing pasture and water, covering up to 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) in a phenomenon called the Great Migration.

Around two million wildebeest (alongside other antelopes and zebras) trek along age-old routes in the Serengeti and Maasai Mara in sync with rainfall patterns.

Their movement is driven by their need for water, and travelling huge distances is thirsty work. But stopping at rivers and other waterbodies for too long can be dangerous, as many of them are filled with crocodiles lying in wait for prey.

Here, one crocodile lurks in plain sight for a herd of unsuspecting wildebeest to approach, before choosing its moment to strike.
