Featuring an old conveyer rubber belt attached to all four wheels of a 4x4 vehicle, the video shows how it diverts the crabs off to the sides and avoids them getting crushed.

The ingenious device was designed by Chris Bray for the eco lodge that he runs on Christmas Island, an Australia territory in the Indian Ocean.

“It’s not 100 per cent perfect, but it’s pretty close!” he says. “Many hundreds or thousands of crabs are crushed on the roads here every day during migration, so every bit helps.”

The Christmas Island red crabs undertake an annual mass migration to the sea to lay their eggs, often taking over the island’s roads.
